Unfortunately, it appears so.
With Nashville’s population growing, more and more vehicles are occupying the streets which only makes things more dangerous for pedestrians. According to Nora Kern, who is the Executive Director of Walk Bike Nashville, pedestrian deaths are on the rise in the city. WSMV News 4 highlighted that “from 2014 to August 2018, 1,636 pedestrians were injured and 78 pedestrians were killed in crashes in Nashville. Last year, the city saw 23 people killed in accidents and 17 already this year.
An important fact that Kern brought up was that “84% of pedestrian fatalities happen at night.” And with daylight savings time ending in just a few days, which means the sun will be setting earlier, it only increases the chances of more pedestrian-related incidents occurring. Therefore, it is important that those who commute by foot or go for a leisurely walk down the road do so with caution, especially when night falls and it is more difficult for motorists to see you.
Aside from being cautious, there are other safety tips recommended by the North Carolina Consumers Council for you to keep in mind to help prevent yet another pedestrian-related incident from occurring.
-
- If the end of daylight savings time means you will be walking in the dark, be sure to carry a flashlight with you and consider attaching reflective tape to your clothing, backpack, purse, or briefcase so that drivers have a better chance of seeing you.
-
- Never rely on the traffic signal to protect you. While some motorists may not be paying attention to the traffic signals, others blatantly disregard them. Therefore, cross with care and be sure drivers see you before you attempt to make your way across the road.
-
- Avoid jaywalking and crossing in between cars that are parked.
-
- Walk on sidewalks when they are available as opposed to walking in the street. In the event there aren’t any sidewalks, walk on the edge of the road and always face traffic.
-
- Remember to always look left, then right, then left again before crossing the road.
-
- Be cautious when approaching a driveway as you never know when a vehicle might be backing out or pulling in.
- Always keep your attention on the road and avoid looking at your phone or listening to music.
Although you can’t prevent every pedestrian-related incident from happening, you definitely can make an attempt to and you can start by implementing these safety tips and others you may be aware of.
