It was recently reported that the brother of a Philadelphia Eagles football player was killed on December 4th after a car wreck with a drunk driver. Bleacher Report stated that Derek Barnett’s brother, David was driving in Nashville when another motorist heading in the opposite direction crossed into his lane. That driver, who has been identified as Felipe Castelblanco, 47, hit Barnett’s vehicle head-on.
After police spoke with Castelblanco, he admitted that he had been drinking whiskey prior to the wreck. The source stated that the Metro Nashville Police Department filed several criminal charges against Castelblanco including vehicular homicide by intoxication, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, failure to render aid, and failure to notify law enforcement in Barnett’s death. At the time the news outlet reported on the incident, Castelblanco was being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
After finding out that his brother had passed, Barnett left Philadelphia and returned to Nashville to spend time with his family. His coach showed his support by saying “It’s a tragedy. You think about the family, you think about [Derek]. He is back in Nashville with his family going through this right now… We do everything we can to win the game, but life is a lot more important than a football game. It puts everything into perspective.”
The reality is, we never know when we might lose someone close to us or when we will engage in a wreck ourselves as it is estimated that “32,000 people are killed and 2 million are injured each year from motor vehicle crashes” [Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The fact is, that one quick trip to the grocer could turn fatal if you happen to cross paths with a drunk driver or that morning commute could result in you suffering from life-threatening injuries if a speeding driver were to crash into the back of your car. And the truth is, when we are faced with such circumstances, we often are unaware of what our first steps should be following the incident.
