    Update: Additional details emerge in fatal I-40 truck accident

    PUTNAM CO., TN – Monday’s fatal truck accident on I-40 in Putnam County seriously damaged the Highway 56 overpass, and will require repairs that are unlikely to be completely finished before August.

    The incident occurred at about 3 p.m. on May 10, when a truck traveling east on I-40 traveled off the right side of the roadway and collided with the Highway 56 overpass, killing its driver.

    WSMV reports that the Tennessee Department of Transportation determined that one of the bridge’s beams was seriously damaged and needed to be replaced. The overpass was closed until temporary barriers were installed on Tuesday, allowing traffic to be moved to one side of the bridge. Temporary supports have been added, and will be replaced by a permanent solution by August.

    TDOT assesses Bell Road intersections after spate of injury crashes

    NASHVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is investigating a string of recent motor vehicle accidents on Bell Road to determine if safety improvements are necessary, WZTV reports.

    Three of the five most dangerous segments of the road are under Metro control, while two are under TDOT’s jurisdiction.

    City Councilman Russ Bradford told a WZTV reporter that he’d like to address safety issues on Bell pending budget appropriations. Representatives of TDOT told the outlet that the department is conducting safety evaluations now.

    The intersection of Bell Road and Zelida Avenue is one of the aforementioned danger spots, and was the site of a serious injury accident as recently as last week.

    Trucker killed in crash on I-40 in Putnam Co.

    PUTNAM CO., TN – A truck driver was killed yesterday when his vehicle collided with the Highway 56 overpass on eastbound I-40, WKRN reports.

    According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the 52-year-old trucker had been traveling in the far-right lane at about 3 p.m. Monday when he lost control of his vehicle. The semi ran off the right side of the roadway and crashed into the Hwy 56 overpass, killing the driver.

    Elderly man in wheelchair killed by hit-and-run driver

    NASHVILLE, TN – An elderly man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene on Friday, WZTV reports.

    The fatal hit and run occurred at the intersection of Westchester Drive and Devonshire Drive in the Bellshire Terrace neighborhood of north Nashville at about 5:15 p.m. on Friday, May 7. Police say that a white Chevrolet Impala hit the 72-year-old man from behind while he was traveling in the roadway, in an area that has no sidewalk.

    13-car pileup on I-24 critically injures 1

    LA VERGNE, TN – One person was critically injured following a 13-car pileup on I-24 southeast of Nashville yesterday, WSMV reports.

    The crash happened near the Waldron Road exit in La Vergne, when a green Buick broke down in the travel lanes and caused a chain-reaction crash that eventually involved 13 vehicles.

    The Buick’s driver was critically injured in the collision. No one else appears to have been hurt.
