BRENTWOOD, TN – Quick-thinking bystanders pulled an elderly couple from a van that had crashed and then caught fire on I-65 yesterday, WHNT reports.
The crash happened near the Brentwood-Nashville border at about noon on Thursday, when a van collided with a cement jersey barrier. The vehicle’s wheels continued to spin, generating enough friction to start a fire.
Several passersby saw the smoking wreck and stopped to help, pulling the van’s driver and a passenger to safety. Medical and fire units were soon on the scene, by which time the elderly couple were sitting safely on a nearby pickup tailgate.
While the exact cause of the crash is not known at this time, an ER physician who helped in the rescue suspected that the driver suffered a medical emergency while at the wheel.
