According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), not only have pedestrian crashes become more frequent, but they have also become deadlier. Although pedestrian deaths were at their lowest point in 2009, the number of fatalities quickly climbed back up in 2016. The IIHS estimates that pedestrian deaths actually increased by 45% since 2009.
